New method cuts construction time and labour needs, boosting efficiency

Researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have reached a new milestone in construction technology by successfully 3D-printing a load-bearing concrete structure on-site — a first for Singapore’s built environment sector.

The innovative technique, developed in collaboration with industry partners including Woh Hup (Private) Limited, dramatically reduces the amount of manpower and time traditionally needed for concrete construction. Early results show labour requirements cut by more than 40%, while overall efficiency has improved by over 60% compared with conventional methods.

Unlike traditional approaches that rely on formwork and manual labour to cast and shape concrete components, the 3D printing process extrudes a specially formulated concrete mix layer by layer directly at the construction site. This not only accelerates build times but also reduces material waste and enhances design flexibility.

The on-site demonstration involved printing structural elements for a building project at Norwood Grand in Woodlands, showcasing how the technology can handle load-bearing components in real work environments. Industry observers say this approach could help address chronic labour shortages, lower costs, and expedite project timelines across Singapore’s construction sector.

Experts also note that the advancement aligns with Singapore’s broader push towards sustainable and automated construction, reflecting national initiatives to modernise urban infrastructure and improve resource efficiency.

As the technology matures, researchers and developers are optimistic about its potential for wider adoption — from residential buildings to complex structural projects — helping reshape how concrete construction is planned and executed in the region.
