Strategic Insights on Transforming IP Assets into Profits
The Malaysian Chapter of the International Intellectual Property Commercialisation Council (IIPCC) successfully co-hosted a panel discussion on the theme of leveraging technology licences towards the monetisation of Intellectual Property.
Held over two days in Penang and Singapore, the Penang phase of the event at Amari SPICE brought together industry experts, policymakers, and business leaders to explore how organisations can tap into technology licensing to transform their IP assets into profitable revenue streams. The discussion revolved around the latest trends and developments in technology licensing, with a special focus on Malaysia and Singapore. Attendees gained valuable knowledge on navigating the complex landscape of IP commercialisation and learned about the vital role of government support and initiatives in driving growth.
In her welcoming speech, Prof. Patricia Chung, President of IIPCC Malaysia, set the tone for the discussion by highlighting the importance of effective IP commercialisation strategies in maintaining a competitive advantage and maximising revenue.
The panel discussion was moderated by Prof. Datin Lorela Chia, President of the Malaysian Association of Sustainable Supply Chain & Innovation, and featured a distinguished lineup of experts including Dato’ Indera Ir. Dr. Ahmad Sabirin Arshad, Group CEO of SIRIM, Dato’ Seri Wong Siew Hai, President of the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association, and Mr. Wilson Tan of Automation SG and CEO of Linkwise Group.
The dialogue presented an in-depth exploration of technology licensing as a strategic tool for IP commercialisation. The experts shared their insights on several key areas, such as the latest trends and developments, highlighting emerging opportunities and evolving practices within the industry, best practices to drive revenue from tech licensing, and common challenges faced in the licensing process and solutions on how to overcome these obstacles.
The main event concluded with closing remarks by Ms Esther Wee, Legal Advisor for the Franchising and Licensing Association of Singapore, who summarised the key takeaways and emphasised the importance of continued engagement and collaboration in the field of IP commercialisation. This was followed by a closed-door round table session with university vice-chancellors, industry leaders, and other key stakeholders. The round table aimed to set up a task force for IP commercialisation which will help to boost the national economy, and participants delved deeper into topics such as systematic approaches to IP financing and commercialisation, global IP strategies in navigating international markets, open innovation, and aligning IP practices with ESG goals.
The panel discussion provided attendees with valuable knowledge and tools to unlock the full potential of their intellectual property to drive business growth. As the event drew to its conclusion, participants departed with a richer understanding of innovative strategies that are essential for the successful commercialisation of their IP assets.
